डल्फिनले मानिसले झै बच्चा जन्माउने गर्दछ!वर्षमा एक वा जुम्ल्याहा बच्चा जन्माउने गर्दछ! यसले मानिसले जस्तै स्तनपान पनि गराउँदछ ! नेपालमा डल्फिनलाई पनि संरक्षित सूचिमा राखिएको छ । २७ वटा स्तनधारी प्राणीका प्रजातीमध्य डल्फिन पनि पर्दछ!

वैज्ञाकिहरुले यसलाई ‘प्लाटानिस्टा ग्याङ्गेटिका’ (Platanista Gangetica) नाम चिन्दछन् । प्रकृति संरक्षणकोलागि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय संघ (आयुसियन)का अनुसार विश्वमा पाइने कूल १ सय ३८ प्रजाति तथा सहप्रजातीमा नेपालको ‘प्लाटानिस्टा ग्याङ्गेटिका’ सूचिकृत गरेको छ! नेपालमा ‘प्लाटानिस्टा ग्याङ्गेटिका’ डल्फिन मात्र भेटिएको छ!

In Hindu mythology, the Ganges River Dolphin is associated with Ganga, the deity of the Ganges river. The dolphin is said to be one of the creatures which heralded the goddess’ descent from the heavens, and Ganga’s mount, the Makara, is sometimes depicted as a dolphin.

‘प्लाटानिस्टा ग्याङ्गेटिका’ स्वच्छ पानीमा पाइने डल्फिन हो ! यो समुन्द्र सतहदेखि चुरे पहाडको तल्लो भूभागसम्म पाइन्छ! अधिक चिसो र अधिक तातो पानीमा पाइदैन! दुषित पानीले कतिपय माछाका प्रजाती लोप भइरहेको छ ! पानी दुषित भएर धेरै स्थानमा डल्फिन घट्दै जानु नेपालको नि एक बल्झिदो समस्या हो !प्रकृति संरक्षणकोलागि अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय संघ(आयुसियन)ले नेपालमा पाइने डल्फिनलाई पनि खतराको सूचीमा राखेको छ!

The South Asian river dolphin has the long, pointed nose characteristic of all river dolphins. Their teeth are visible in both the upper and lower jaws even when the mouth is closed. The teeth of young animals are almost an inch long, thin and curved; however, as animals age, the teeth undergo considerable changes and in mature adults become square, bony, flat disks.
